Adult Intensive Outpatient Program

An estimated 34% of adults will experience an anxiety disorder at some point during their life and these disorders are linked with significant distress and impairment (Szuhany & Simon, 2022).

North Coast Psychological Services now offers Adult Intensive Outpatient Psychotherapy Services that target symptoms of anxiety that interfere with functioning.

This evidence-based highly focused treatment approach involves clients working with their therapists typically daily during the week and provides them with the opportunity to target avoidant and/or compulsive behaviors with real world treatment in the community with guided feedback as to application of learned therapeutic skills.

A comprehensive assessment is first conducted to ensure that this program is best suited to meet your clinical needs. If the intensive outpatient approach is recommended, clinicians and clients collaboratively develop a treatment plan that often involves a few hours (2-3) of work each day during the first week of treatment, which will often occur in the office as well as in the community where the anxiety is most often triggered. A commitment to practicing the skills outside of clinical work is expected. The anticipated duration of treatment varies depending on the need of the client, but typical treatment duration ranges from 5 to 15 business days. This intense treatment approach allows clients to return to their improved lives more expediently.

Research supports intensive outpatient psychotherapy in the treatment of agoraphobia, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorders, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobias. A recent study found that more than 2/3 of patients tapered down to once/week session following completion of an intensive outpatient program that averaged 21 hours of clinical work over 12 sessions (see Falabella et al., 2022).
